Poor Folk was Dostoyevsky's first novel and was completed when he was twenty-four. "If I do not find a publisher for it," he wrote to his older brother, "I shall probably hang myself." But the novel did find a publisher. More than that, it made a celebrity of Dostoyevsky even before publication. Grigorovich, a friend and former classmate, took the manuscript to Nekrasov, the poet. They sat up together a whole night reading it. At four o'clock in the morning they knocked at Dostoyevsky's door, and Nekrasov, by way of introduction, flung himself on Dostoyevsky's neck. Then the three young men talked and talked for hours, as only Russians can talk. Nekrasov next went directly to Bielinsky, the critic, whose word was then law in the literary world of Russia. "A new Gogol has appeared!" the poet cried. "Of course," the great critic retorted ironically. "With you people Gogols spring up like mushrooms." He took the manuscript reluctantly, but when he had read it he exclaimed: "Bring him here, bring him here, quick!" Tell me, young man," said the formidable critic to Dostoyevsky, excitedly, "do you comprehend how true all you have written here is Do you really grasp all this terrible truth No! At your age that is impossible. You have pierced the very essence of things. The truth has been revealed to you as to an artist. It is a gift from on high. Guard this gift, be faithful to it, and you will become a great writer." Thus it was that before the novel had appeared in print Dostoyevsky could write to his brother with pardonable pride: "Well, brother, I believe my fame will never again reach the height it has. Everywhere they show me unbounded respect, and I am the object of the greatest curiosity. I have become acquainted with any number of the best people. Prince Odoyevsky asked me to give him the pleasure of visiting him. Count Sologub is beside himself and is tearing his hair. Panayev told him a talent had arisen who .would trample them all in the mud. He went to Krayevsky and asked him, 'Who is this Dostoyevsky Where can I get hold of Dostoyevsky' Krayevsky replied that Dostoyevsky would not do him the honor of paying him a visit. It's really true. The aristocracy are walking on stilts and think they can destroy me with the magnificence of their favor. All look upon me as an infant prodigy. I cannot open my mouth without every one repeating that Dostoyevsky has said something, Dostoyevsky wants to do something. Bielinsky loves me as much as a man can love. Recently Turgenev returned from Paris and instantly, from the very start, became so attached to me that Bielinsky calls it a case of love at first sight." Bielinsky's verdict was fully borne out when the novel appeared in 1846. It was received with wild enthusiasm, as was almost every later work of Dostoyevsky's....
